A Big ol' Family Reunion

Not too long ago we felt the call to Zion and to the tops of the mountains. So of course we responded and traveled thousands of miles to meet people that are vaguely related to us. Well, they are sort of related to me. Actually they are not related to me at all. But they are related to Heather. Anyway, The great event that I am rambling about was a family reunion of Heather's extended, extended family.

The descendants of Milton Steed gathered in the Mountains nearby John's Valley in Utah which is a little north of Bryce Canyon. The family came together to see what was left of the town where Heather's grandpa grew up. They told stories of how the land was green and beautiful in those days with plenty of rain. There was a growing community there and lots of prosperity. Then climate changed and became much drier. The water supply dried up and nothing much would grow anymore. Now all that is left is the foundations of buildings, a few barely standing structures, a graveyard and lots of memories.

We learned something about the past, but mostly just had fun together with our families. We camped near a small reservoir and the kids had great fun splashing together. Someone also brought some ATVs and we took turns flying around with the kids. We even had a patriotic evening when we heard war stories from the Grandpas.

I had the easy part of the trip since I flew up to meet the family, who had driven to get there. Heather and Mindy (pregnant and morning sick Mindy) and all of their seven kids loaded up into a 12 passenger rental van (agent on van return: 3,000 miles?!?) and drove 24 hours straight without stopping for more than a short break and a little nap at their sister Jenny's house. They were all exhausted! After everything was over, I flew home, and they did it all over again. Heather says that planes sound pretty nice right now.

Maybe this is my computer's problem. But I haven't been able to see any of your photos since your Hawaii post. Is is just me?
